East Midlands Gateway Fire Protection

Start Date: 25th March 2024
End Date: 26th March 2024

Overview

East Midlands Gateway is a brand-new warehousing logistics centre which is state of the art with a fully automated high bay racking area and a 45-metre-tall warehouse with robotic forklifts operating inside.

Situation

Project description:

The only way to access the Production Warehouse was to walk along the front of the Loading Bay Doors, with fork lift trucks loading trailers making the area a risk area for pedestrians. The solution was to build a Mezzanine walkway to avoid human presence on the Warehouse floor.

Fire protection was required for this project, with Aspiration already present within that area, but the length of the walkway (98 metres) meant that we needed to install 3 Manual Call Points, 1 per staircase, 1 at each end and 1 centrally. The GENT Honeywell detection was commissioned and added into the existing Zones they were fitted into.

The walkway is now fully open and the MCP’s labelled, covers fitted and full training and familiarisation submitted to staff.

Immediate Alerts: When a fire alarm is triggered, the roll call system is activated and immediately alerts designated personnel or emergency responders. This ensures that they are aware of the emergency situation and can initiate the evacuation process promptly.

Accurate Accounting: During the evacuation, the roll call system provides real-time information about who has checked in and who is still unaccounted for. This information is crucial for emergency responders to identify individuals who may be trapped or in need of assistance.

Efficient Resource Allocation: By knowing who has safely evacuated and who is still unaccounted for, emergency responders can allocate their resources more efficiently. They can focus their efforts on areas where individuals are still present or where there may be a higher risk of people being left behind. This helps optimize their search and rescue operations and increases the chances of successfully locating and evacuating everyone.

Minimizing Risks: Real-time information about the presence and location of individuals ensures that emergency responders can make informed decisions to minimize risks. They can identify areas that may pose a higher danger or require additional evacuation measures. This allows them to take appropriate actions to mitigate potential hazards and ensure the safety of both evacuees and responders.

Communication and Coordination: The system facilitates communication between fire wardens, emergency responders, and individuals within the building. It ensures that everyone is aware of the situation and can follow the necessary evacuation procedures.

Post-Evacuation Analysis: After the evacuation, the roll call system provides a comprehensive report of individuals who successfully evacuated and those who may still be missing. This information helps emergency responders in their search and rescue efforts.

Ensuring Safety: During an emergency evacuation, it is crucial to ensure the safety of all individuals within a building. Real-time information allows emergency responders to quickly identify and locate individuals who may be trapped, injured, or in need of assistance. This enables them to prioritize rescue efforts and provide timely help to those who need it most.

Compliance with Regulations: Many jurisdictions have specific fire safety regulations that require businesses to conduct regular fire drills and maintain accurate records of evacuation procedures. Implementing a fire alarm roll call system ensures compliance with these regulations and provides evidence of adherence to fire safety protocols.

Reduced Liability and Insurance Costs: In the event of a fire or emergency, proper documentation of individuals' presence through a fire alarm roll call system can help protect the client from liability claims. Accurate records can serve as evidence that all necessary precautions were taken, reducing the risk of costly legal disputes and potential increases in insurance premiums.
